I’m not really sure that it’s true that women are simply more selective. Elsewhere someone brought up an interesting point, the men who aren’t selective (and are insensitive to rejection) are invariably going to be disproportionately represented in the types of guys a woman is likely to be asked out by. I mean, by definition they’re asking out far more women. Since we generalize based on our experience, this would naturally lead women to conclude that men aren’t selective.
